Low Frequency Effects ( LFE )

Originally starting out with 70 mm film, Dolby 5.1 and later provides a special LOW FREQUENCY EFFECTS CHANNEL that has an audio response from 3 Hertz to 120 Hertz.

Standard Dolby and DTV audio channels bring expanded audio response of 3 Hertz to 20,700 Hertz.

For the end user, this means that you can add a transducer (a device that converts an electrical signal into mechanical motion) that will extend your audio coverage far below the response of the best subwoofer available.  This goes below the range of hearing, and enters a new realm: sensation (vibration).

YOU CAN NOW LITERALLY FEEL THE SOUND!

To the Broadcaster, this means new audio spectrum monitoring equipment, to ensure that the studio's HVAC unit is not providing earth-shaking tremors to audiophiles with equipment capable of reproducing the low frequency rumble coming from his studio's air conditioning system.

After much research, we chose the ButtKicker 2  Transducer for reproducing these low frequencies, to go along with our in-house JBL MR935 speakers, with a JBL SR4725 stacked on top ( for each Dolby channel ).

Each Dolby Channel has 2 JBL speaker systems.
This is one of 7 channels.

This may be an overkill for the average living room, but it sure sounds sweet.  Audio power for each pair of speakers is supplied by one channel of a QSC PLX-3402 amplifier.  Each amp is capable of 3400 watts @ 2 ohms, or 1100 watts per channel @ 4 ohms, the way we have ours configured. We chose these amps because they have a unique high frequency switching power supply that supplies high current, draws typically 40% of the power of a comparable amp, switches in stages as needed, yet weighs only 21 pounds.

The LFE  ButtKicker2  Transducers are actually bolted to the frame of the couch and other seating, so as to change the low frequency audio signal into an actual vertical motion that can be felt.

This will give you an idea of the actual size.

Recommended power for the ButtKicker is 400 to 1500 watts.
I run mine a little lower.  The unit contains a movable piston
that converts electrical energy into mechanical energy.
