Put yourself in the place of your antenna. You are on a tower, looking at your news van, 20 miles away. Think of it as a car headlight, 20 miles away. Unfortunately, somebody else put up a bunch of 1000 watt streetlights in every direction you look. From where you are, the ground beneath you looks like a pincushion of bright lights. You're like an astronomer looking for stars at noon! This is an example of the R.F. term "desense," short for desensitization. Comparing RF levels to video levels, an analogy would be a news interview, and some rookie stringer gets behind your subject, and turns on his new 500 watt halogen light pack, and your waveform monitor suddenly "flatlines" at 140 IRE Units of video! High RF levels do the same thing to the electronics in your antenna system and receiver.
Antenna system electronics can usually handle a -40 dbm signal. But when a -20 dbm (or hotter) PCS signal hits a 20 db gain antenna, the output is 0 dbm. If you try to feed 0 dbm into a 30 db gain LNA (Low Noise Amplifier), the amplifier would have to have an output power of 1 watt! Most modern LNAs are capable of only 5 - 10 milliwatts of power (0.01 watts, or +10 dbm), and are severely overloaded. Strong PCS signals can also reduce the fade margin in STL receiving equipment.
In COFDM Systems, the many carriers can mix together if the RF Signal Level is too high, and cause increased Bit Error Rates and a corrupted Soft Decision Data Stream. The result is usually a video "freeze" or "dropout". Too high a COFDM RF Signal level is undesirable. To this end, we now offer AGC on some of our LNA Systems.
Why buy a new receiver to reduce PCS interference? The problem is really in the electronics at the antenna.
